Right now we are getting ready to help introduce a very exciting, unique Soft collar from a new emerging Company called "Picky Parrot Products". This collar is geared for birds that pluck and pick out their feathers. It allows the birds to move about freely but protects the delicate skin and feathers below the level of the Collar. We have talked with literally hundreds of customers who have birds that need special protection that this collar will provide. The Inventor and Designer, Patti Lemaire, has been working on this prototype for years and has used with her parrots. Now she is finally ready to get it to market and Avian Fashions is very happy to work with her in Partnership. This will launch in April.

A Fortified Funfetti Velour FlightSuit will be launched in March here on our Website www.avianfashions.com which in response to customer feedback--which will allow the FlightSuits to be more durable and longer lasting for birds that like to chew and play with their FlightSuits. Pictures will be posted soon.

We are in the process of revamping our Web Site introducing YouTube Videos from our Breeders to make donning the FlightSuit easier for our customers. We also are now on Twitter a good fit for us so we can get "Tweet" our specials from our Birdie Blog out to our feathered fans quickly.

We recently introduced our Birdie Hoodie which is adorable and just slips over the head much like our FeatherSweaters do. They come in a variety of colors and have a rainbow hood and drawstring. Perfect for the Spring. Our favorite Spring Costume--Avian Attire--is the Birdy Bunny. A colorful vest with a cap including Bunny Ears--always get a chuckle.

Avian Fashions has been able to assist many customers (Feathered and Unfeathered Friends) over the past Thirteen Years. We are always grateful when our Designer Team can customize our great products to help a "Bird in Need".

This story comes to us from the Director of Veterinary Medicine at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Pa. She wrote to us a few weeks back about a Female Waldrapp Ibis in need.

Below is an email we received after Eleya, our designer on staff, customized a custom a feather protector for this special bird.

Hi Avian Fashions,

I wanted to give you an ibis update...absolutely great news! The jacket is amazing and she is starting to heal well! Thank you so much custom-making it with example all the different dimensions and special requirements. It so soft, flexible, and fits her perfectly.

Because of the design, we easily slipped it over her head once and now only have to lift up the flap to treat the wound. We had to cinch the Velco down at the end of their attachments (I drew the black lines on the Velco so the techs know where to line it up to fit snugly). She picked at the flaps so we sewed snaps on the tail end of the flaps & she now leaves it alone.

We lift up the back of the jacket to tend to the wound. Note the wound dressing is snapped onto the top of the jacket. At first she just pulled it out from under the jacket. So we pre-cut many wound dressings and sewed snaps onto them & now she can't remove it.

We unsnap the old dressing...

Treat her wound and then snap a new dressing in place.

In only a couple of weeks her wound has healed significantly (after months of nothing!). Most of the scab came off and there is healthy tissue under it. The rest of the wound is quickly healing now that she can't pick it.

The jacket does not affect her walking flying or eating. I am really grateful there is a way to help her heal.

WOW!!! ANIMAL PLANET came to film our birds and the inventors of the fabulous FlightSuit !!! It was so much fun and so exciting - because we are new bird owners they asked to interview my mom and Sammy! (That is the picture of my mom practicing her answers for the interview.) I can't wait until the show comes out. It is called "Your Pet Has to Have One" The show is supposed to air in the middle of November, but I will keep you updated in the blog! Sammy is a STAR!!!! Well Sammy has been home for quite a while now. We all love her so much - who knew a bird could be soooo much fun! She seems to like hanging out with me as much as as I like hanging out with her! She still really enjoys her walks to the pool and the way everyone pays attention to her. I have to say, she is beautiful :-)
I would just like to mention if anyone out there is thinking about getting a bird (cause they are the best pets ever!) there are some things you need to think about...one of which is...
Are you going to have time to pay attention to your bird?
--- Well, with the FlightSuit that is easy - just get her (or him) dressed and then she can help with laundry, cleaning, and watch TV with you without any hassle what-so-ever!! You have a buddy wherever you go (and no mess!!)
Everytime we take Sammy out of her cage we put a FlightSuit on her. At first we would give her a special treat to let her know that is was a good thing to get dressed. Now she just knows it is part of the routine. It makes taking her anywhere so easy.... I wish she could come clothes shopping with me!!
I am learning new stuff all the time. I'll pass along all the great info I get. Until next time :-)

Yahoooooooo!! Sammy is home! The breeder told us to leave her be for the first 24 hours. We could talk to her, but not touch her. She was a bit scared, you could tell by her crest (those are the feathers on the top of her head). Her cage and our house was all new to her AND she just left her clutchmates (kinda like siblings) for the first time. We wanted her to feel safe and happy, so we talked in quite voices around and to her, and did what we were told. She has settled in now that she has been home a little over a week. She comes everywhere with us - thanks to the wonderful FlightSuit she wears! She even comes to the pool! My friends think she is the coolest thing! She is soooooooo fun! I LOVE HER!! (By the way this is my friend with me in one picture and my big brother in the other picture with Sammy. He might blog too -- so now we have Big Brother Brian and Bella's Blog of a Brand New Baby Bird -- try to say that 10 times fast! HA!)

We got to visit Sammy again - whoohooo! I just love her. We brought the flighsuit with us this time so she could look and it and get familiar with it. (It is kinda hard to see it the picture, because my shirt almost matches!) We get to bring Sammy home in less than two weeks! YESSSSSS!!!!! Mom says it is time to get the cage and set it up! I am just soooooo excited! (I hope Sammy likes our home - just as much as we like her!)

We found a breedier that owns a store - great! Mom went and scoped the cockatiels out. (After doing all the research, she said that a cockatiel would be the best kind of bird for our family.) We picked one that we thought was really pretty and so sweet - and named her Sammy (just incase it turns out that it is a "he"). We have visited Sammy a few times over the last couple of weeks. She is so cool and fun!!! My brothers and I fight over who gets to hold her. Mom says to stay calm and quiet so we don't scare the bird, but brothers can be so pushy! This is a picture of Sammy at the store. We are falling in love already! We are going to bring a flightsuit with us next time, so she can start getting the used to it - mom says we need to start "conditioning her to the FlightSuit" so we can take her out and not worry about her getting poop on us or the house. The breeder says she is almost weened and ready for us to take home...I can't wait!!!!!!!

Just like Bella is finding out- there are many things to consider before you bring your feathered friend home for the first time. If you are considering bird ownership or have recently acquired a feathered friend, here are some helpful tips and links.

Lorraine Moore, owner /inventor of Avian Fashions/ bird diapers, has had birds in her home for over 17 years. Thirteen years in this diaper business has taught her quite a lot!! Here are some tips she has to share with you. Her current flock includes Lily (Timnah African Gray), Rainbow (nan cap conure), Madeline (umbrella cockatoo), and Molly, Dolly, and Summer, (3 parakeets). Feel free to leave comments or questions for Lorraine on the blog!

Things to Think about:

Have you ever owned or known someone who owned a bird before?
How much time do you have to devote to the bird?
How much space do you have to devote to the bird?
How much money do you have to devote to the bird and the cage (sometimes a cage can cost more than a bird?)
What are the ages of children in the home?
Will they handle the bird?
Are there other pets in the home?
Are you willing to adopt an older bird that might need more attention that might need more time to train or would you be better suited to a younger bird that would adapt to surroundings, flightsuits, and your family more quickly.
Do you know where to buy a bird? Do you want to get your bird from a pet store or a breeder?

I am doing LOTS of reading to learn more how to care for a bird when we get one. There is much to know, but it is fascinating! We have decided a cockatiel would be the best for our family. Mom says we are going to start looking for some breeders. She says we want one that hand feeds and holds the babies a lot so that they are used to being handled. I think she is starting to look for breeders on the internet. When she finds one, she says is going to ask questions, questions, questions - about their business, their birds and what to do! THEN...WE GET TO GO HOLD BIRDS - YEAY!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Oh my!
What a treat to see Swoozie on the front page of Avian Fashions! Your suits are just awesome. The winter fleece one was just as nice. Swoozie had NO problems outside in the cooler weather with that suit.

I am sooooo excited...my mom says that I can get a pet bird! I have fallen in love with my neighbor's Umbrella Cockatoo, so when Mom said that we would start looking into bird ownership, I did the happy dance!!!! She says we have to find out more about what type of bird would be best for our family and what we need to buy. We also need to research how to take care of our bird before we get to go to the breeder to pick one out. I can't wait to go to the library and learn more! I just can't wait to get a bird!
