Bella's Blog of a Brand New Baby Bird continued!

Yahoooooooo!! Sammy is home! The breeder told us to leave her be for the first 24 hours. We could talk to her, but not touch her. She was a bit scared, you could tell by her crest (those are the feathers on the top of her head). Her cage and our house was all new to her AND she just left her clutchmates (kinda like siblings) for the first time. We wanted her to feel safe and happy, so we talked in quite voices around and to her, and did what we were told. She has settled in now that she has been home a little over a week. She comes everywhere with us - thanks to the wonderful FlightSuit she wears! She even comes to the pool! My friends think she is the coolest thing! She is soooooooo fun! I LOVE HER!! (By the way this is my friend with me in one picture and my big brother in the other picture with Sammy. He might blog too -- so now we have Big Brother Brian and Bella's Blog of a Brand New Baby Bird -- try to say that 10 times fast! HA!)

Bella's Blog of a Brand New Baby Bird continued!

We got to visit Sammy again - whoohooo! I just love her. We brought the flighsuit with us this time so she could look and it and get familiar with it. (It is kinda hard to see it the picture, because my shirt almost matches!) We get to bring Sammy home in less than two weeks! YESSSSSS!!!!! Mom says it is time to get the cage and set it up! I am just soooooo excited! (I hope Sammy likes our home - just as much as we like her!)

We found a breedier that owns a store - great! Mom went and scoped the cockatiels out. (After doing all the research, she said that a cockatiel would be the best kind of bird for our family.) We picked one that we thought was really pretty and so sweet - and named her Sammy (just incase it turns out that it is a "he"). We have visited Sammy a few times over the last couple of weeks. She is so cool and fun!!! My brothers and I fight over who gets to hold her. Mom says to stay calm and quiet so we don't scare the bird, but brothers can be so pushy! This is a picture of Sammy at the store. We are falling in love already! We are going to bring a flightsuit with us next time, so she can start getting the used to it - mom says we need to start "conditioning her to the FlightSuit" so we can take her out and not worry about her getting poop on us or the house. The breeder says she is almost weened and ready for us to take home...I can't wait!!!!!!!

Just like Bella is finding out- there are many things to consider before you bring your feathered friend home for the first time. If you are considering bird ownership or have recently acquired a feathered friend, here are some helpful tips and links.

6. Will they handle the bird?
7. Are there other pets in the home?
8. Are you willing to adopt an older bird that might need more attention that might need more time to train or would you be better suited to a younger bird that would adapt to surroundings, flightsuits, and your family more quickly.

Bella's Blog of a Brand New Baby Bird

I am doing LOTS of reading to learn more how to care for a bird when we get one. There is much to know, but it is fascinating! We have decided a cockatiel would be the best for our family. Mom says we are going to start looking for some breeders. She says we want one that hand feeds and holds the babies a lot so that they are used to being handled. I think she is starting to look for breeders on the internet. When she finds one, she says is going to ask questions, questions, questions - about their business, their birds and what to do! THEN...WE GET TO GO HOLD BIRDS - YEAY!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!
